Two wonderful homiletical scholars and teachers of preaching have published a new textbook that is worth checking out! Nora Tisdale and Tom Troeger, both professors at Yale Divinity, have just released A Sermon Workbook: Exercises in the Art and Craft of Preaching. I’ll leave it to you to read more about the book description at the link.
Here are a few things I REALLY like about their approach that dovetails nicely with craft-oriented pedagogy:
- They foreground the identity of preacher, inviting students to see themselves as a preacher (rather than just someone who preaches) and live into that vocational identity.
- The content is modular rather than linear, and the modules are designed so the order can be varied based on the needs of the student.
- The approach blends content learning with weekly writing exercises, which are smaller than a sermon but build sermon-writing skills and integrate learning as it happens.
